Compress a PDF to Under 500 KB

500 KB is a common limit for documents in online applications, insurance claims and school portals. Photo documents and short scans can usually get there with the right compression level.

The strongest level is preselected so you have the best chance. The tool doesn't aim at an exact size – it optimizes the images in the PDF – so check the size shown after compressing.

Works best with PDFs that contain photos or scanned pages. PDFs with only text are often already small.

What reached 500 KB in our tests

  • Four camera photos on four pages: 471 KB with “Recommended”, 205 KB with “Strong”.
  • Two pages with large photos: 432 KB with “Recommended”.
  • Scanned A4 pages at 300 dpi: about 190 KB per page with “Strong”, so roughly two pages fit.
  • A six-page scan stayed at 1.1 MB even with “Strong”.

Which level to choose

For photo documents, try “Recommended” first – it keeps more detail and often already lands under 500 KB. For scans with several pages, “Strong” is the better start. If the file is still too big, remove pages you don't need or split it.
