Which JSON works
The converter looks for the list of records in your file. A list of objects such as [{"id": 1, "name": "Anna"}, …] becomes a table with one row per object. A list of lists becomes rows as they are. If the list is wrapped in an object – like {"data": [ … ]} from many APIs – the list is found automatically, and a single object becomes a single row.
Nested data, explained
If the file is not valid JSON, you get a message with the approximate position of the problem, for example a missing comma or quote.
- Nested objects become their own columns, for example address.city and address.zip.
- Lists inside a record are written as JSON text in one cell.
- Fields that only some records have get empty cells in the other rows.
- Columns appear in the order the fields first occur.
About JSON and Excel files
- JSON
- JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard data format of web APIs and apps. It stores records as named fields, which makes it easy for programs to read.
- Excel (XLSX and XLS)
- XLSX is the modern Excel spreadsheet format (Excel 2007 and newer); XLS is the older format. Both store data in rows, columns and sheets, and open in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. All Excel tools →

JSON to Excel – frequently asked questions
How do I convert JSON to Excel?
Choose your .json file and click “Convert to Excel”. Each record becomes a row and each field a column.
What happens to nested objects?
They are flattened into columns with dotted names, such as address.city. Lists inside a record are written as JSON text.
My JSON has a wrapper like {"data": [...]}. Does that work?
Yes. If the object contains exactly one list, that list is used as the table.
Why do I get an “invalid JSON” message?
The file contains a syntax error, such as a missing comma, quote or bracket, or it is JSON Lines (one object per line). Fix the file or wrap the lines in [ ] separated by commas.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The JSON is read and converted in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
