When you need PNG instead of JPG
Some editors, design tools, app stores and upload forms only accept PNG. PNG is also the right format when an image will be edited several times: every time a JPG is saved again, it loses a little quality, while a PNG stays exactly the same no matter how often you save it. That makes PNG a good working copy for screenshots, diagrams or scans that you still want to crop, mark up or annotate.
What the conversion can and can't do
- The PNG looks exactly like your JPG – every pixel is kept.
- The PNG is usually larger than the JPG, because PNG compresses without loss.
- Converting does not remove existing JPG artefacts or add a transparent background – the background stays as it is in the photo.

JPG to PNG – frequently asked questions
How do I convert a JPG to PNG?
Add your JPG images and click “Convert to PNG”. Each image is saved as a PNG with the same width and height.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. The PNG keeps the image exactly as it is, including any compression artefacts of the JPG. It prevents further quality loss when you edit and save the image again.
Why is the PNG file bigger?
PNG stores images without loss, so photos need more space than in the compressed JPG format.
Will the background become transparent?
No. The image is converted as it is. Removing a background is a separate editing step.
