Compress a PDF to Under 100 KB

Some job portals, university applications and government forms only accept attachments up to 100 KB. That is a very small limit: one scanned page usually needs more. This page uses the strongest compression level right away and tells you honestly what to expect.

The tool cannot aim at an exact size – it optimizes the images in your PDF as far as the “Strong” level goes. Whether you end up below 100 KB depends on how many pictures and scanned pages the file contains.

Works best with PDFs that contain photos or scanned pages. PDFs with only text are often already small.

What we measured

In short: text documents and single small graphics can stay under 100 KB, scanned pages and photos usually can't.

  • Two pages with large photos: 11.0 MB → 120 KB with “Strong” – close, but still above 100 KB.
  • Four camera photos on four pages: 3.8 MB → 205 KB with “Strong”.
  • A scanned A4 page at 300 dpi ends up at roughly 190 KB with “Strong”.
  • A text-only PDF of 35 KB stayed at 33 KB – it was already small.

When 100 KB is not reachable

  • Upload only the page that is really needed – extract it into its own PDF first.
  • Scan again at 150 dpi in black and white or greyscale instead of colour at 300 dpi.
  • Ask whether the portal accepts several files – then split the PDF into single pages.

Compress PDF to 100 KB – questions and answers

Can every PDF be compressed to 100 KB?

No. The tool reduces image quality only as far as text in scans stays readable. Scanned pages and photos usually stay above 100 KB, text-only PDFs are often already below.

Which compression level is used on this page?

“Strong” is preselected, because it gives the smallest files. You can switch to “Recommended” for better image quality.

Why is my PDF still larger than 100 KB?

Each scanned page needs around 190 KB even with strong compression in our tests. Upload fewer pages or rescan at a lower resolution.

Does compression make the text blurry?

Real text in a PDF is not changed. In scanned pages, the text is part of the image and becomes softer with strong compression.
